Godzilla: Truly the King

Godzilla Minus One….what a way to end 2023 and start the new year in 2024. The king is back and larger than ever. After having watched the film three times, twice in color and once in “minus color,” I can safely say that Godzilla has finally been taken back to his roots and terrorized the screen once again.

It has been a great year for the G-Man. First we get the announcement of the new Legendary film: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Then, we get to see Legendary take on the small screen with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. And finally, to cap off the year, Toho gives us their new reincarnation of the King of the Monsters with Godzilla Minus One. If you are, or have ever, been a fan of Godzilla then you were living your best life in 2023, and yet, it is only the beginning of what’s to come from the giant prehistoric lizard.

‘Minus One’ is truly a contender for one of the best films of 2023, and this is from a year where we were gifted with a multitude of great films as well. As mentioned, I was lucky enough to watch it in both color and “minus color.” You might be thinking that it would not seem like much of a difference in respect to the film itself. You are right in assuming that it is the exact same film with the only difference being that it is in black and white. However, it will still change the way in how you view the film. If you remember, the original Godzilla film from 1954 was also in black and white. You may also remember that it was an allegory on the destructive power of what nuclear weapons could bring upon this world. Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color does a great job at paying homage to its original 1954 predecessor as well as reminding us of the horrors that come from war. This film definitely showcases the horror that Godzilla is meant to bring to the big screen.

As we get closer and closer to the March release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, we can all revel in the glory of both king’s as they don the big screen together once again. Rather than going against each other in a massive battle to determine who will be king, they will team up once again to battle an even larger threat that threatens the balance and stability of the natural order. You can see Godzilla again in theaters in Godzilla x King: The New Empire on March 29th, 2024. See the king’s join forces to protect both the natural and human world. Will they survive the battle and save the world? There’s only one way to tell: ‘Let them fight!’
